Eye Exams

Yearly comprehensive eye exams are recommended for most children and adults to monitor for changes in eye health and eyeglass prescription.

A yearly exam may also include a dilation to check for signs of diseases such as glaucoma and cataracts or possible dangerous ocular effects of high blood pressure and diabetes.

Additional testing is always a consideration.

A comprehensive eye exam includes:

focusing problems
eye disease

Visual Field Tests

The visual field analyzer systematically plots the patients’ field of vision and the eye doctor then interprets the results. Retinal sensitivity can be determined through this threshold test.

Plotting of the visual field is important for many disorders, particularly glaucoma and is excellent for detecting neurological disorders such as:

Tumours
Strokes
Aneurysms

Digital Retinal Imaging

Digital Retinal Imaging

We strongly believe early detection is key to preventing vision threatening eye diseases. We therefore include retinal imaging in all of our full examination fees.

Retinal Imaging includes digital photography (a detailed picture of the retina) and breakthrough technology called Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). OCT is a non-invasive test that uses light waves to capture cross section images of the retina, similar to a MRI.

Since this new technology allows us to view the retina in detail, not available through traditional examination methods, we are now able to detect eye diseases often before symptoms arise.

This imaging assists in the diagnosis and management of:

Diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy
Age-related macular degeneration
Glaucoma
Retinal disease

Dry Eye Exams

During your dry eye exam, your doctor will perform a series of clinical evaluations to determine the most likely cause and severity of your dry eye disease. Next, you and your doctor will create an individualized treatment plan to help manage your symptoms going forward.

It all starts with a dry eye questionnaire, which helps to communicate your daily symptoms and monitor how you are doing over time. You will then undergo a tear film analysis where the quality and quantity of your tears will be directly measured using specialized equipment. Finally, your doctor will take a close look at the ocular surface of your eyes as well as the inner eyelid Meibomian glands to evaluate their functional capacity.

The Meibomian glands are responsible for producing lipids (oils) that coat and stabilize the tear film from evaporation. 86% of patients diagnosed with dry eyes suffer from Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). However, there are other potential factors such as low tear production or unbalanced corneal neural output. Better understanding of what is causing your dry eye symptoms will help your doctor to determine the best treatment strategy for you.

Laser Surgery

Common questions we frequently are asked: ‘Does your clinic do the surgery?’, ‘What is meant by co-management?’, and ‘Since you aren’t a surgeon, how are you involved in the refractive surgery?’.

Co-management of Laser Vision Correction means we provide the required pre-testing and post-operative care. The actual procedure is performed by the surgeon who specializes in refractive surgery.

This co-management works to the patient’s advantage in multiple ways:

Whenever we recommend a surgeon or surgery centre for the eyes, we only refer to those whom we have seen consistently excellent results and have an exemplary 'track record'. We will only refer to surgeons whom we would be comfortable operating on our eyes.

We are an advocate for you, our patient, if concerns arise. We communicate directly with the surgeon, when necessary, and provide ongoing reports of your progress to the surgeon immediately after your office visits.
Our doctors have extensive knowledge of post-operative results since we have been co-managing Laser Vision Correction for many years. Many of our staff, family members and friends have undergone the procedure and continue to enjoy their new vision each and everyday.

Pre Exams

A pre exam can include:

NCT (Non-Contact Tonometer): This device uses a gentle puff of air to measure the pressure inside the eye. This is usually done as a glaucoma screening test.
Pachymetry: The pachymeter uses ultrasound to measure the thickness of the cornea (clear tissue in front of the colored iris). This measurement enables greater accuracy when measuring the pressure inside the eye. Corneal thickness measurements are also used to help determine if a patient is a candidate for laser vision correction.
Auto-Refractor: This instrument estimates the patients prescription. This can be used by the doctor as a starting point in the eye exam.
